BS EN ISO 14001:2004 environmental management standards exist to help organisations

• minimise how their operations (processes, etc.) may adversely affect the environment (i.e. cause harmful changes to resources, air, water, or land);
• comply with relevant laws, regulations, and other environmental requirements, and
• continually improve in the above areas.

Such risk (Aspects) can be identified through a variety of formal and informal methods, such as risk screening, impacts matrices, overlay mapping etc. Identification of regulatory requirements is also important as a precursor to establishing an management programme.
